The Quadrivalent flu vaccine is now available: It is not too early to get your flu shot. The CDC recommends getting vaccinated as soon as possible as it takes several weeks to build up the antibodies. The shot does not wear off, and the benefits last the entire flu season until next summer. All children, pregnant women and adults of all ages are recommended to get the flu shot. Those who are older than 65, have chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, lung or heart disease are especially at risk for influenza and secondary conditions such as pneumonia and should get vaccinated immediately to insure protection. Please call our office to schedule an appointment to receive your vaccine.

Nicole Ciullo, RD, LDN: We are happy to announce that our dietician Nicole Ciullo, RD, LDN is back in the office and will have more hours by appointment beginning in March. We hope our patients will take advantage of her knowledge and expertise in diet, nutrition and health. Nicole has helped many of our patients lose weight, maintain the weight loss and lead healthier lifestyles. Allergy season is here: Remember to change your air conditioning filters and consider keeping your windows closed for the next few weeks in the case of severe allergies. Fresh air has a heavy concentration of pollen and other allergens.

School and sports physicals: Appointments are booking up so be sure to schedule these appointments for you children as soon as possible. In order to guarantee that the physical forms are completed on time, schedule well in advance of the deadline on the forms.

Memory and cognitive screenings now available: We are offering comprehensive 30 minute evaluations for memory and cognitive screenings. These screenings are covered by medicare and most commercial insurance plans, and they can identify early signs of memory loss and determine risks for dementia. If you have concerns about your memory or those of your family members please schedule an evaluation with our office.

***Patients please be advised that our office has just been made aware of a recall on the generic medication Atorvastatin. Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals is voluntarily recalling 10mg, 20mg and 40mg because they may contain small glass particles. A list of the lot numbers can be found on the Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals web site: www.ranbaxyusa.com You should also check with your pharmacy.

As of 4/1/2013 Newtown Medical Group will be able to accept all insurances for lab draws in our office thanks to Manhatten Laboratories.

Aortic Aneurysm screenings now available on site: This screening is covered by most insurance plans. It is an important preventative ultrasound exam for patients over 50 years old with the following risk factors:

A history of high blood pressure or high cholesterol

Former or current smokers

Family history of cardiovascular disease

The specialized ultrasound screening is painless and typically takes less than a minute.

Dietician on site for weight and nutritional counseling: Patients with Keystone or Personal Choice Insurance may be eligible for up to 6 free sessions per year.
